In the Analytical Instruments Group, the Material and Structural Analysis Division is looking for an Application Scientist in our Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEM) who is driven by method/new product development and keen to bring new products to the market. This role is based in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, and belongs to the Architecture and Validation group within the TEM Solutions Research and Development organization. The immediate team consists of 10 people committed to develop and validate innovative technologies for Cryo-EM for our Life Science customers.

Department:

As Application Scientist you will belong to a collaborative team and will focus on the application aspects of product development for Cryo-EM. Cryo-EM workflow is a multi-step process that involves multiple interconnected hardware and software systems to prepare and qualify samples, recording data on the different cryo-EM workflow tools, and processing the collected data into meaningful information, e.g. where the drug is bound to the target. The focus of this position is on understanding the end-user challenges, customers’ use cases and future needs; translating this information in product requirements and / or functions; validating that the solutions are fulfilling the insights. The Application Scientist develops application roadmaps that can capture market and scientific trends and connect them to module and product roadmaps. The Application Scientist is asked to think in terms of workflow, with the goal to deliver to the customer a flawless experience from sample preparation to data analysis.

You will work closely with application development engineers, architects, project managers within R&D, and colleagues outside R&D such as sourcing, operations, and service and report directly to the group lead within the Architecture and Validation department in R&D.

Such developments require Application Scientists that understand how customer intend to use our tools as part of their workflow to ensure that the solution we develop fulfils the customers’ needs.

For delivering future product propositions, we are looking for a professional and passionate candidate who is encouraged by technology and complexity.

Main Responsibilities:

  • You co-operate with architects and designers on the workflow aspects of the modules, systems and software by validating that the entire solution.

  • You write test plans, define test cases, carry out and/or coordinate the execution of these test cases, and write test reports with recommendations.

  • You follow closely users’ application trends and translate these trends into inputs for the definition of HW and SW requirements for our product lines.

  • You are responsible for the validation of new products developed within R&D

  • You participate in the creation of (interactive) user guides, documentation and training materials. You support rollout of new products at launching.

  • You guide and support engineers with solving issues in your area of expertise.

  • You promote the adoption of workflow aspects throughout all layers of the R&D department.

Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a University Degree or equivalent in Physics, Chemistry, Bioengineering or Life Science.

  • Hands-on experience with Cryo-EM methods and protocols.

  • Mentality of continuous improvement of the Cryo-EM workflow.

  • Experience with statistical tools.

  • Interest to learn new technologies.

  • Strong communication and pro-activeness.

It is very desirable that the candidate has knowledge in some of the areas:

  • protein purification and biochemical/biophysical characterization

  • single particle analysis

  • tomography

  • model building
