The Opportunity

This position works out of our Lake Forest location in the Infectious Disease division.

As the Director, Medical Affairs, you will be the functional lead to provide medical and clinical guidance for R&D projects and contribute to medical safety evaluations, including risk management, product changes, and health assessments on product performance and patient safety. You may also support product/program development and customer education in infectious disease areas as needed.

This role is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of the health risk medical assessments and provides leadership and direction to product performance testing and evaluation, use clinical and medical experience and knowledge in the area of Patient safety and risk management activities, and they serve as an advisor to support publications, abstracts and presentation and cross-functional needs of different infectious disease diagnosis. Provides medical leadership for product and clinical product performance functions including monitoring and reporting of product safety related items (i.e. complaints, vigilance, MDRs), development and modification of risk management documents such as FMEA, Hazard Analysis and Health Hazard Evaluations (HHE). This includes providing critical direction in establishing and implementing required product safety and medical education processes and procedures for new products and technologies as clinical studies are implemented, worldwide regulatory approvals are obtained and products are commercialized.

What You’ll Work On

  • Oversee medical investigations of product complaints
  • Direct the design, planning, development and monitoring of  medical risk management.
  • Systematically summarize literature around specific topics around patient safety, utilize and apply the knowledge of risk management to medical devices (ISO 14971), accurately assessing probability of occurrence and severity to patient.
  • Prepares HHEs from a medical perspective in collaboration with other needed function in order to properly assess the risk and evaluate possible root causes leading to the identified health hazard.
  • Participates in the Risk Analysis process for new or improved devices to ensure that potential risks to patients associated with use of the device are identified and appropriately analyzed. 
  • Prepares medical platform documents and medical opinions to support product development
  • Contributes medical perspective to the decision making process regarding product recall or field action by attending meetings with the Product Action committee, summarizing clinical feedback, performing product testing as needed and providing general clinical knowledge and expertise
  • Responsible for having  leadership and collaborative approach to build relationships cross-functionally throughout the Division   
  • Provides medical support, as needed, in infectious disease areas that includes representing the Division at Medical Conferences, Sales Meetings and Physician/Hospital interactions, conveying complex medical and scientific information to professional audience including key opinion leaders and Abbott advisors in both oral and written formats, and assisting the commercial organization with the development of therapeutic area specific medical education programs and marketing materials.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of pertinent literature
  • Cultivate relationships with internal and external customers, (e.g., consultants and investigators) to continue to grow their expertise with product
  • Identify medical education process, and implement medical education programs and platforms
  • Guides, directs and serves as a role model for the organization, coaches staff and establishes succession plans for key positions.

Required Qualifications

  • MD or PHd or equivalent degree
  • Minimum 8 years of experience
  • Demonstrated strong relationship building and matrix management, strong team work and strong communication skills
  • Must possess skills which span both science and business and have a thorough understanding of infectious diseases and patient safety.
  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization.
  • Ability to travel, including internationally.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Work experience in Infectious Disease is strongly preferred.

The base pay for this position is $143,300.00 – $286,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
